He was born on May the 6th, 1976 in Khatai village of Aghtafa region. He finished Yenigun village secondary school in 1983 and the desire to become a militant made him apply for the School of Supreme Officers. But he could not enter that year. But he did not lose his hope. After some tuition and studies, he managed to enter Baku Technical School of Light Industry, Aghsafa branch. In September 1994, he was called to join the National Army and started his service in one of the military units in Baku. He soon gained great respect of the soldiers and the officers. After having Military trainings for 6 months, he went to the Font line.
Ilham had just started improving his combat skills and learning new techniques of the battle, when the March events interrupted his plans.
On the 13th of March 1995, a group of armed traitors tried to overthrow the Government. Naturally, this attempt had to be prevented for the sake of our Country and it was prevented in a timely manner. By the 17th of March the group had already been fully disarmed. Unfortunately, this difficult operation cost the blood of many Patriotic sons of the Motherland. Hassanov Gulbala who was faithfully performing his duty, was shot from the opposite side.
He was single.
Hasanov Ilham Gulbala was posthumously awarded the title of "National Hero of Azerbaijan" by the decree № 307 of the president of the Azerbaijan Republic on April 4, 1995.
He was buried in the alley of Martyrs in Tovuz. In Agstafa there is a street named after the hero.
